The Swiss Federal Supreme Court accepted an appeal against its decision to save investigations in the case of smuggling Egyptian money by former President Mohamed Hosni Mubarak, his family, and a number of officials and businessmen.

The Egyptian Attorney General, Nabil Sadek, said in a statement, Monday, August 29: “The Swiss Federal Supreme Court has decided to accept the appeal of the Egyptian National Committee to recover funds and assets abroad, and to resume investigations regarding the freezing of smuggled funds.”

The Swiss authorities had decided, at an earlier time, to save the investigations, but the Egyptian National Committee, headed by the Attorney General, decided to appeal its decision to save the investigations.

The Public Prosecution accused Mubarak of undertaking, during the period from 2002 to 2011, in his capacity as a public employee (the President of the Republic), to seize and facilitate the unlawful appropriation of the funds of one of the state bodies, an estimated amount of 125 million 779 thousand and 237 Egyptian pounds from the general budget allocated to the communications centers in the presidency.

Egyptian opponents took to the streets and squares to protest against the deteriorating living conditions, political and economic conditions and the spread of corruption, which forced President Mohamed Hosni Mubarak to step down from power, on February 11, 2011, after ruling the country for thirty years.
