The Arab Network for Human Rights Information, Maharat Foundation, and the Gulf Center for Human Rights, in cooperation with IFEX, announced the selection of prominent human rights defender Hana Adwar, from Iraq, as the Defender of Human Rights and Freedom of Expression for the month of May, as part of the campaign “Supporting Human Rights Defenders and Freedom of Expression”.

Hana Adour is the fourth human rights defender to be chosen within the campaign "Supporting Human Rights Defenders and Freedom of Expression", which was launched last February. Prominent human rights defender and courageous Tunisian journalist Naziha Rjiba (Umm Ziyad) was chosen first in February, then the defender. On human rights and the prominent blogger Ahmed Mansour from the United Arab Emirates who was recently arbitrarily arrested as a human rights and freedom of expression defender for the month of March, while human rights lawyer Gamal Eid from Arab Egypt was chosen as the defender of human rights and freedom of expression for the month of April.

Hana Adwar was known for her tireless activism to defend and protect public freedoms, including freedom of opinion and expression, and freedom of the press. She also worked to improve the human rights situation and defend women's rights in Iraq, and she participated in establishing the Civil Initiative to Preserve the Constitution, and suing the Speaker of Parliament in August 2010 before the Federal Supreme Court around the open session.

The court's decision played a decisive role in the House of Representatives resuming its sessions, and is now working tirelessly with Iraqi civil society organizations on an advocacy campaign for the passage of the Freedom of Assembly and Peaceful Demonstration Law, the Law on Combating Domestic Violence, and the Law on Protection of Diversity and Prevention of Discrimination. In 2011 she was awarded the Sean McBride International Prize by the World Peace Office.

Partners for Transparency issued its twenty-second report, which focuses on monitoring and analyzing legislative and procedural developments related to combating corruption, as well as counting the facts that were revealed during last April and classifying them sectorally, geographically, and judicially.

Legislative and procedural developments:
The report indicated that the month of April witnessed the holding of a number of events and activities in some academic institutions, ministries and government departments in the context of awareness and education related to combating corruption, and there were frequent statements by some officials related to the nature of the general trend and political performance related to combating corruption and wasting public money.

Most corrupt catering:
The report indicated that each of the Ministries of Supply and Agriculture came first among the corruption incidents, with a score of 12 incidents for each of them out of a total of 68 corruption incidents during the month of April 2017, followed by the Ministry of Health with 9 incidents of corruption, then each of the localities sector, the Interior Ministry with 5 incidents. Each of them.

Cairo's lion's share:
The report emphasized that Cairo governorate still acquired the largest share of corruption incidents during the month of April, due to the concentration of administrative headquarters there.

Cairo obtained 19 incidents of corruption during April 2017, followed by the governorates of Beheira, Alexandria and Giza with 6 incidents each, then Minya governorate with 4 incidents, followed by Qalyubia, Qena and Beni Suef governorates with 3 incidents each.

The governorates of Sharkia, Dakahlia, Kafr El Sheikh, Sohag, and Port Said also have two incidents of corruption each, while the governorates of Menoufia, Assiut, Damietta, Ismailia, South Sinai, New Valley, Aswan and Fayoum came last with a score of one incident for each of them during the month of April 2017.
