Partners call for strengthening oversight of vital sectors as an urgent necessity to combat corruption in Egypt

Partners for Transparency Foundation issued its monthly report “Corruption Report for January 2025”, which monitored 67 corruption incidents in various sectors. The report showed that the financial and banking sector topped the list of the most corrupt sectors with a rate of 37.31%, followed by the local government and administrative corruption sector with a rate of 26.86%, then the supply sector with a rate of 16.41%, the education sector with a rate of 13.43%, and finally the health sector with a rate of 5.97%.

Cairo governorate recorded the highest number of incidents, with 43,28%, followed by Giza, Qalyubia, and Sharkia governorates. The report indicated the escalation of efforts by regulatory and executive authorities to combat corruption, as more than 7 campaigns were implemented against fictitious educational entities, 25 campaigns to combat money laundering, in addition to 11 inspection campaigns in the catering sector. The judicial authorities also continued to prosecute those involved, and issued severe sentences in cases of embezzlement, tax evasion, and medical negligence.

In this context, Ahmed Issa, Director of the Research and Studies Unit at the Foundation, stressed: “The importance of strengthening oversight of vital sectors, especially the financial sector, education, and health, with the need to expedite the approval of the Local Government Law to ensure effective oversight.”

The report recommended intensifying the use of artificial intelligence technologies to detect money laundering, tightening control over unlicensed educational institutions, enhancing market inspection mechanisms, and conducting awareness campaigns on the dangers of corruption and its negative effects on society.
