The Partners for Transparency Foundation (PFT) announced that President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and his government took legislative measures to confront corruption during their first year in office, in comparison to the strong political discourse during the period from June 2014 until June 2015.
The Foundation announced in a report, Saturday, that the president addressed the issue of corruption in five official public speeches, and appeared to be adopting a "intolerant" political discourse regarding corruption and the perpetrators of crimes of manipulating public money, as well as mentioning numbers and statistics in some of his speeches, which reveals Follow up on the progress of cases and the work of the competent regulatory authorities.
The report pointed out that by analyzing the president's speech, it became clear that he is aware of the impact of corruption on the business and investment climate in Egypt, which makes him raise this issue repeatedly during his meetings with groups of investors and businessmen.
The report pointed out that the president’s strong political rhetoric regarding corruption is not commensurate with the “limited” legislative measures taken during the first year of his rule, saying, “Although the president has legislative power in the absence of the election of a parliament, he has not yet used this power in Issuing or amending anti-corruption legislation to ensure that the perpetrators of these crimes do not get impunity.
The recommendations contained in the report stressed the need to pass a law to protect witnesses and whistleblowers on corruption cases, pointing out that there is an urgent need to develop a national index to measure the extent of the phenomenon of corruption based on scientific and objective measurement of the phenomenon with all its components, stressing the importance of the role of civil society organizations in educating citizens about their role in Combating corruption and reporting the perpetrators of its crimes.
