Today, Sunday, March 19 until Saturday, March 25, a delegation representing the Civil Society Organizations Coalition for the Comprehensive Periodic Review, which includes 229 Egyptian civil society organizations, will start its visit to Geneva to participate in the activities of the 34th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council.
The human rights delegation stated, in a statement today, that it will hold several meetings with senior officials of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the official missions of the member states of the Council, dealing with human rights issues in Egypt in light of the recommendations accepted by the Egyptian government during its submission to the comprehensive periodic review mechanism (November 2014 - March 2015). ).
The delegation’s visit will also witness the launch of the first report to assess the human rights situation in Egypt in light of the recommendations of the comprehensive periodic review, which covers the period from March 2015 to the end of January 2017 during the symposium that the coalition delegation will hold on March 23, 2017 at the United Nations headquarters, in the presence of the media and some officials In the missions of member states, UN officials, and officials of international non-governmental organizations.
It is worth noting that the Egyptian Civil Society Organizations Coalition was established as an independent entity in May 2016 as a way out of the comprehensive periodic review project, as a tool to improve public policies during the transitional phase supported by the European Union, and the coalition is managed through a board of trustees elected directly from among the member NGOs, and includes the alliance 229 Egyptian civil society organizations from various governorates, covering all aspects of human rights work.
The coalition had prepared its report on the assessment of the human rights situation in Egypt in light of the recommendations of the comprehensive periodic review through a participatory mechanism managed by a specialized technical committee, and the Board of Trustees of the Alliance approved the report and approved the formation of the delegation participating in the 34th session of the Human Rights Council, consisting of 5 leaders and officials of the organizations Members also decided to launch the report for the first time during the delegation's current visit to Geneva.
